UNICO’s Derby dinner money raises money for cancer research

The Rehoboth Area UNICO chapter held its fifth annual Kentucky Derby lasagna dinner on May 6 at St. Edmond Parish Hall, attended by more than 60 members and friends.

The races were projected on a large screen. Music and vocals were provided by UNICO member Vince Varrassi, a talented artist from Milton who performed American classics as well as Italian and modern favorites, on the keyboard and accordion.

A team of volunteers prepared homemade lasagna, appetizes, desserts and more, and decorated the hall to enhance the festive mood, many wearing attractive Kentucky Derby hats.

Vince Varrassi entertains with melodies familiar to all.

Cathy Stanzione is intent on organizing a raffle to enhance the proceeds.

Proceeds from the event will be donated to the UNICO National Foundation Cancer Research and Prevention Fund and St. Jude Children’s Hospital. These funds will be given directly to those organizations with no middleman involved. When entertainer Danny Thomas started St. Jude Children’s Hospital, UNICO National was the first organization to support his efforts.

A sincere “mille grazie” goes out to all who worked to make this event a success.
