UNICO Rehoboth Area Chapter celebrates Italian heritage and culture with the annual Italian Movie Night each year in January. A segment from the “Don Matteo” series is shown, in Italian with English subtitles, while members enjoy food from Nicola Pizza, popcorn and other snacks.

Proceeds from this event are used to prepare Easter baskets for children ages 12 and younger, and gifts for those 13 and over, – who reside in local shelters. UNICO chapter member and Outreach Chairperson Joan Boraski coordinates this event. She directs the buying, assembling and delivery of the Easter holiday delights.

At this meeting, four new members – Ann Bailey, Rosanne Hitt, Marina Hayden and Kimberlee Kelly – were inducted by chapter president Dr. Steven Stanzione and vice president Pam Notarangelo.

The chapter’s next event, Feb. 8 at 6 p.m., was a celebration of Carnevale featuring a menu of traditional Jambalaya, Caesar salad, cornbread, beignets and beverages with music by Bob and Judy Boesch, as Sunny Bar Café on Rehoboth Avenue.

The Feast of St. Joseph, scheduled for March 19, provides an opportunity to reflect on an age-old custom for Italian Catholics, that of blessing and distributing bread in honor of this venerated saint whose intersession saved a Sicilian village from a severe drought. The priest/presider at morning Mass on that day at St. Edmond Church blesses the bread which is then distributed to those in attendance to take home and to share with family and friends. The remainder is donated to a local food pantry.

On March 21 at 6 p.m., a representative from the National Thalassemia Association will address UNICO members and guests at the St. Edmond Education Center on King Charles Avenue in Rehoboth. The topic will be recent advancements in the research and treatment of Cooley’s Anemia. The Rehoboth Area Chapter has been an avid supporter of this association.

Upcoming events include the awarding of $1,500 scholarships to honor an Italian American football hero Brian Piccolo on April 18, and a special Kentucky Derby event on May 4 featuring an innovative menu of Italian specialties, to support St. Jude Children’s Cancer research hospital and the local charity Shepard’s Way.
