UNICO members plan the coming year’s events

REHOBOTH BEACH – As a new calendar year (2022-2023) begins, members of the Rehoboth Area Chapter of UNICO National pause to recount blessings – being able to help others.

Karen Coombe and Vice Varrassi enjoy singing together.

The goals of UNICO are such that chapters aim to be of service to those in need, by raising funds to support local and national charities, and by doing community service, while at the same time preserving Italian heritage and culture. Activities and events are created with the purpose of reflecting that heritage: bocce tournaments, Italian movie nights, homemade baked goods and lasagna dinners, etc., most coinciding with import-ant dates and events in Italian history and culture.

Kathy Pizzadili is truly in the spirit for the Kentucky Derby.

Drafting the calendar for this fiscal year, many of the same programs will be featured, adding variety for the various interests of members and considering the popularity of each event:

• September – Bocce tournament • October – Italian Heritage Month • November – Brian Piccolo Award to honor local high school scholar athletes

• December – Christmas party and sing-along at a local rehabilitation center with treats and gifts of personal items for the patients

• January – Italian movie night

• February – Carnevale

• March – La Festa di San Giuseppe

• April – Easter baskets for homeless children and “Pasta Challenge” at the monthly meeting

• May – Annual Kentucky Derby and lasagna dinner

Attempts will be made to bring back the ever-popular Opera at the Beach after a two year hiatus caused by the COVID crisis. Most of these are open to the public, with proceeds donated to charity.
