In our most recent UNICO calendar year (July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2023), UNICO Rehoboth Area can count many accomplishments.
Donations to charities (local and national): St. Vincent de Paul Society (St. Edmond Church), Womenade, Lighthouse for Broken Wings – monetary and practical gifts (in addition, many of our members cook for this and other homeless shelters), Brian Piccolo Award ($1,500 to a student), Cooley’s Anemia, Cancer Research, Saint Jude Children’s Hospital.
Promotion of Italian heritage and culture: Bocce tournament, celebration of Italian Heritage Month, Italian Movie Night, Carnevale, Kentucky Derby Italian dinner …
UNICO as a national organization also honors its members and associates with awards and scholarships. In March of 2023, Dr. Victor Basili received the Marconi Award, established in 1955 to honor scientists who exemplify Guglielmo Marconi’s vast scientifi c and creative accomplishments in their personal career achievements. Dr. Basili is the second member of UNICO Rehoboth Area to receive this honor. The first was Joseph Mule in 2010.
At the National Convention in Sanibel Harbor, Fla., (July 26-30), the Phillip Mazzei Award will be granted to Richard A. DiLiberto Jr. This award is given annually to an individual who carries the torch of freedom so that it will always remain in our hearts: enhancing the interest of fellow men in public affairs, rendering patriotic service to our community, demonstrating interest in historical facts and contributions made by our “founding fathers,” protecting and advocating high cultural standards, and believing in the “rghts of liberty and happiness” as gifts of God.
Each year, over $100,000 in scholarships is awarded to students across the nation – including Delaware.
Additional information will be provided throughout the year (2023-2024) for these and other events, all of which are open to the public.
