The Brian Piccolo scholarships 2024, named to honor the Italian-American football hero who played for Wake Forest University and the Chicago Bears (1965-1969 ), were granted to student athletes by UNICO Delaware on April 18 at Saint Edmond Parish Hall, Rehoboth Beach DE.

Six students sponsored by members of the Rehoboth Area Chapter were awarded monetary gifts along with a copy of “Passage to Liberty – A History of Italian Immigration” to further explore their roots.

Nominees were required to be of Italian heritage, have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and to participate in a sporting activity. Letters of recommendation from coaches and /or teachers were also required stating the outstanding character traits exemplified by Brian Piccolo (courage, friendship, loyalty, teamwork, dedication, sense of humor,
and anti-bias).

Michael Frederick, football coach at Cape Henlopen High School in Lewes, was the keynote speaker. He encouraged parents, grandparents and friends to continue to support youths both academically and athletically.
