BRUSSELS – During Italy’s national lockdown, the Italian civil protection department activated the EU’s Copernicus observatory satellite to monitor its territory to check on gathering points and healthcare facilities. The aim was to monitor activities and public spaces during the COVID-19 emergency. The announcement was made by European Commissioner for Crisis Manage-ment, Janez Lenarcic. The civil protection used Copernicus to make sure people are not gathering outside.
